Structured Play PDF Print E-mail

If play is to be a learning process it must be structured.

Modern psychology is agreed that play is the starting point for cognitive development in the infant child.  This development does not occur without a teacher's help and participation.

Without the help of a teacher setting the environment and providing the suggestions, children reach stalemate and their play becomes intellectually aimless.

Role of the Adult

  • Provide materials - accessible to all children.
  • Initiate play.
  • Resolve conflicts.
  • Ensure progression.
  • Extend language.
  • Extend childrens' thinking, scientifically, mathematically and logically.
  • Provide follow up activities.
  • Provide space and time for play.

There should be equal opportunities for all pupils - boys and girls.  Teacher/adult should be flexible when grouping.

  • Encourage children who do not know how to play.
  • Establish a relationship with insecure children.
  • To share children's enjoyment.
