Marking Policy PDF Print E-mail

In order to ensure effective evaluation of teaching and learning, the school has drawn up a marking policy which will be implemented by all the staff.

AIMS 

  • To assess pupils' understanding.
  • To assess pupils' progress and therefore take their learning forward.
  • To assess effectiveness of teaching.
  • To show we value pupils' work and to give encouragement and reassurance.
  • To ensure consistency and to maintain satisfactory standards through the school.
  • To inform parents regularly of child's performance.
  • To develop children's independence.
  • To ensure good management of teacher's time, ie value of time spent marking in relation to ‘value added' to children's learning.


The following statements have been agreed by everyone and will be implemented.

  1. The school adopts a positive approach to marking.
  2. All work set by teachers will be responded to appropriately.
  3. Feedback from written work will be immediate or as soon as possible.
  4. In the early years work will be marked with the child present.
  5. Positive comments, stars, stickers will be given to show appreciation of good work. 
    - (Stars and stickers for P1 - P7 pupils)
    - (Special Needs, spelling tests and exceptional work - Key stage 2)
  6. Pupils will be encouraged to become self markers and to self correct.
    - ie mistakes will be underlined with a view to self correction. 
    - Use of symbols, eg. sp - spelling mistake, gr - grammar mistake.
  7. Various forms of marking will be used through the Key stages.
    Eg - Teacher/ Pupil   
    Pupil/Pupil,
    Teacher alone,
    Pupil alone
