Homework is regarded as an essential element in children's education. It has many advantages in that it provides extra time for practice, application and consolidation of new skills taught in school. It provides parents with an insight into stages of learning which their child has reached and reinforces a powerful link between home and school. Written homework is not given to pupils at the week-ends. This changes however for all those P6 and P7 pupils who are preparing for the Transfer Test. During the week P3 - P5 children are normally given written homework in only one subject each night. They may also be given unwritten homework such as researching information on a particular topic. Spelling, tables and reading are also given at varying degrees. P6 and P7 are the same as above but may change according to Transfer Test preparation. Suggested average times for homework: P1 - P2 15 - 20 mins P3 20 - 30 mins P4 -P5 30 - 45 mins P6 - P7 45 - 60 mins plus Please remember that the amount of homework varies according not only to age but also to the ability of your child. A FEW TIPS 1. Always turn off the television while your child is doing their homework. 2. Give the child a little while to unwind when they come in from school, but make sure that the homework is done early in the evening, as the child begins to get tired he/she loses the power to concentration and it will take much longer to complete the work.
