Health Education, as a Cross Curricular theme is for the most part taught through incidental opportunities arising from particular subject areas. Science for example lends itself very well to Health Education. In Science we cover healthy and unhealthy eating habits. We stress the importance of safety regulations when handling apparatus and discuss the reason for such regulations and the possible consequences if these regulations are not observed. In Science we also cover areas such as personal hygiene and the need for adequate sleep. In Geography/Science we ask children to look at their immediate environment at home and at school and to consider in what way is their environment healthy or unhealthy. Is there anything we could do to ensure that we live in a healthy and safe environment? This leads onto topics such as recycling and man-made and natural materials. In Maths for example we measure heights of children. Results are recorded in different forms. Comparisons are made and we discuss what helps us to grow. In PE children become aware of the need for exercise. They also learn why it is necessary to follow certain rules of safety. Of course English is integral to all the aforementioned areas through relevant talking and listening, reading and writing activities. Other very important areas such as Road Safety and what to do if I get lost are also covered. Through Religion we cover aspects of bullying and making right decisions. During break and dinner time children are asked to observe basic safety rules regarding use of cutlery, seating arrangements in the dining-room and walking on the corridor. The pupils are encouraged to see the logical reasoning behind these rules and to actually adopt them as their own. STAFF DEVELOPMENT
