Reading Objectives P1-P7 PDF Print E-mail

PRIMARY 5 OBJECTIVES

1. To move confidently away from basic reading scheme, e.g. novels.
2. To identify reading selection - fiction from non-fiction.
3. To decide a clear purpose for reading - enjoyment or information.
4. To further encourage use of dictionary / contents / index / atlas.
5. To read a chapter or short story at one sitting.
6. To apply word attack skills - to be able to recognise words in a passage.
7. To use information from appropriate sources to investigate subjects under discussion.
8. To be able to distinguish between poetry, prose and drama.
9. To use evidence from the text to support opinions.
10. To discuss the features of language - words, phrases, sentences, how words are spelt, etc.

ACTIVITIES AND METHODS

a. Allow children time and opportunity to browse through a wide selection of books.
b. Opportunities to use reference books arising from work on history, science, nature study, current affairs.
c. Predicting outcome of scientific experiences.
d. Teacher reading to class from book selected by child including, poetry, plays, prose and children’s own work.
e. Predicting how characters in stories might behave in another situation.
f. Teacher setting specific goals - questions before reading begins.
g. Finding words in dictionaries using first three letters.
h. Locating information using index/contents page.
i. Cloze procedure exercises.
j. Selecting appropriate details from different passages.
k. Comprehension based on all levels - reading between the lines and beyond the lines, etc.
l. Represent sequence of events from stories through pictures, drama, story, individually and in groups. (Book reviews).
m. Children keeping reading record and evaluating books.
