Page 4 of 7 PRIMARY 4 OBJECTIVES As for Primary 3 plus - 1. To derive pleasure and enjoyment from different types of books and poems, computer, text etc. 2. To apply reading strategies to unfamiliar words. 3. To predict the end of a story. 4. To enhance their use of a dictionary, to use contents and index pages. 5. To read with some independence, concentration and understanding. 6. To begin to use evidence from texts to support opinions. 7. To be aware of the value of illustration in a book. 8. To express thoughts, feelings and opinions about a text. 9. To use a variety of texts to support learning across the curriculum, e.g. science/history. 10. To further encourage silent reading. 11. To sequence a story. Many children will have moved confidently away from the basic reading scheme by P4. ACTIVITIES AND METHODS Those still relevant for P3 plus a. Encourage children to bring in favourite books from home or public library and teacher would read aloud and discuss with others. Read from familiar poems, stories by pupils themselves and talk about what they have read. b. Drawing children’s attention to the fact that they can read from a wide variety of written material, e.g., street signs, notices, posters, price lists. c. Asking for recall on what is read, noting the sequencing and ability to summarise. Asking for the main idea in a story. d. Asking questions on different levels, reading out of text. e. Cloze procedure - oral and written (regular deletives). Group prediction, comprehension frameworks. f. Flow diagram summaries of stories. g. Encouraging sustained silent reading, shared reading experiences of stories, poems, plays and picture books. h. Illustrate an idea from a book for the setting of a story. i. Talks about different parts of a book, e.g., saddest, most exciting etc. j. Make simple diaries of events in a book. k. Character studies. l. Drama activities. m. Collect information from a variety of texts. n. Children keeping reading record and evaluating books.
