Reading Objectives P1-P7 PDF Print E-mail

PRIMARY 3 OBJECTIVES

As for P2 plus -

1. To recognise key words in any context.
2. To extend sight vocabulary and develop word-attack skills.
3. To predict from contextual clues.
4. To extend comprehension beyond the literal.
5. Books as a source of information - use of dictionaries.
6. To read to one another from their own writing.
7. To recognise language of reading - author, contents page, illustrator, publisher etc.
8. Begin to encourage silent reading.
9. Begin to use simple paraphrase.
10. To share an interest in a book with others.
11. Begin to develop proofreading skills.
12.To encourage children to have an awareness of certain authors.
13. To continually refer to the 100 key Words - (Ladybird).

ACTIVITIES AND METHODS

As for P2 plus :

a. Introduce children to a wide variety of reading materials, including class books, displays, label wall displays in real sentences.
b. Providing exercises in doze procedure based on children’s previous knowledge.
c. Dividing and building compound words - incidentally.
d. Compiling children’s own word books.
e. Comprehension activities - reading beyond the text.
f. Encourage use of library, set up attractive displays, e.g., nature table with relevant books, science displays.
g. Adding ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ extend verbs. Subdivide unknown words into recognisable parts.
h. Sequencing of sentences or word patterns, e.g. spellings, discussion of word patterns, families/sounds.
i. Group discussion and individualised reading.
j. Following written instructions from work cards.
k. Alphabetical order - using guide words at the top of the page in simple dictionaries, extending to second letter.
