Reading Objectives P1-P7 PDF Print E-mail

PRIMARY 2 OBJECTIVES

As for Primary 1 plus:­

1. To recognise and remember letters and corresponding words.
2. To understand what is read.
3. To gain experience of a wide variety of interesting and enjoyable reading materials.
4. Use with some independence written materials in print or on screen to support their learning.
5. To predict outcomes using contextual clues.
6. To read for enjoyment.
7. To retell stories or parts of stories.
8. Sequence verbally the main events of the story.
9. To identify the main characters in a story.
10. Tell how the character feels from story content.
11. To enhance their knowledge of the language of reading. Character, author etc.
12.To become familiar with the 100 Ladybird Keywords (depending on the child’s ability).


ACTIVITIES AND METHODS

a. Extension of basic sight vocabulary.
b. Continuation of graded reading scheme.
c. Phonic games and displays - repeat initial sounds. At this stage most children should be familiar with all the sounds the consonants say.
d. Daily opportunities for reading aloud for those children who are less fluent. More fluent readers read aloud 3/4 times each week.
e. Providing a wide variety of reading materials and encouraging the children to read them at school and at home.
f. Preparing children to follow simple written instructions.
g. Simple sequencing - pictures.
h. Retelling story through role play.
i. Speech, rhymes, jingles, tongue twisters.
j. Comprehension through discussion.
k. Explore pictures from - e.g., magazines.
