Talking and Listening Aims P1-P7 PDF Print E-mail

PRIMARY 7

OBJECTIVES

Pupils should be able to:

(a) Listen attentively with understanding and courtesy.

(b) Be able to communicate clearly and confidently for a variety of purposes and audiences.

(1) Talk lucidly about their thoughts and feelings.

(2) Talk logically and sequentially about their work and experiences.

(3) Tell a simple story in their own words, aided by voice quality, timing and emphasis.

(4) Give clear instructions and directions.

(5) Explain a process of experiment, eg - in Maths or Science.

(6) Carry out a sustained discussion in a group.

(7) To be able to participate confidently in interpreting poetry, prose and drama for an audience.

(8) Take part in a more formalised prepared discussion- debating.

(9) Enjoy taking part in situations which involve role play and drama.

ACTIVITIES AND METHODS (As for P6 plus)

(a) Debates - on topical subjects -

The advantages and disadvantages of school uniforms, or smoking, leaded/unleaded petrol.

(b) Hat debate - pick out topic and speak for 1 minute.

(c) Discuss characters from novels, short stories etc.

(d) Develop empathy with them.

(e) Children exchange thoughts and ideas about books they have read.

(f) Project work, design own books. Children take responsibility for different aspects of topics.

(g) Reading aloud to audiences from varied material, eg - prayer, poem, story, etc.

(h) Listen to a broadcast for a particular purpose and if necessary take notes.
