Talking and Listening Aims P1-P7 PDF Print E-mail

PRIMARY 3 (General Aims)

(As for P2 plus)

Pupils should be able to:

(a) To display ability to initiate and maintain conversation with other

people.

(b) Listen to a story/poem and display clear understanding through

Discussion and answering questions.

(c) Respond to instructions as part of a practical activity.

(d) Talk with teacher and peers about experiences, i.e., organise their

thoughts and present their ideas in sentence form.

(e) Participate in role play.

(0 Listen to visitor, TV or radio programme for an identified purpose.

(g) Talk with friends and respond to instructions given by computer/teacher.

(h) Convey verbal messages clearly and accurately. Allow others to speak,

listen and respond with interest, respond to others using adequate

vocabulary.

ACTIVITIES AND METHODS

(a) Retell the main events of a story/poem/school outing. - (sequencing)

(b) Discuss characters in a story in a simple way, e.g., Do you like Peter? Why?

(c) Dramatise the main outline of the story/poem/song, e.g.  Polly put the kettle on/Innkeepers or 3 Little pigs.

(d) Play word game - ‘I spy’, Rhyming games.

(e) Discuss pictures and put in proper sequence.

(f) Discuss children’s own news, capitalise on anything unusual or interesting a child has to tell. Have a time when children can tell you their own news. Newspaper items etc.

(g) Encourage child to talk about their feelings or thoughts by providing opportunities for individual children to recount experiences. Get children, e.g., weaker ones to go on messages.
