Language is the most important means of communicating, thinking and learning for children and adults. Oral language remains the most widely used method of interaction with others throughout a child’s lifetime. It helps pupils to develop concepts and formulate ideas which can be transferred to all areas of learning.

The development of childrens conversation is essential if the aims of the Curriculum are to be realised. At the same time talk cannot be developed properly unless children are good listeners. Listening involves giving active attention to other people in order to receive their messages and ideas through stories, instructions or explanations. The ability to communicate adequately through talking depends on how we receive messages from others, therefore we must be able to listen to their points of view and respond accordingly.

We aim to provide all children with the opportunity to develop their talking skills in the classroom situation to enhance their learning and build up their confidence so that they will be able to speak to an audience in a formal situation.

We hope to foster the concept of listening, appreciating others view, giving attention to the person speaking and responding in an appropriate manner.

We hope to achieve these aims by providing a favourable and stimulating classroom atmosphere where conversation is accepted and valued. Most talking and listening will take place naturally in the context of other subject areas. Opportunities will arise from Science and Maths activities, PE, news reporting, book review discussions, role play, seasonal activities, games visits and structured play in the early years and through both Key Stages. Children will be given the opportunity to express themselves individually, in pairs or in groups. They will be encouraged to become leaders and reporters of other peoples viewpoint within a group. Reluctant children will be encouraged but not forced to participate.
