Page 5 of 7 PRIMARY 5 OBJECTIVES 1. To locate information from different sources and use it in writing. 2. To be able to write for a variety of purposes and audiences in various forms. 3. To vary the length of sentences and vary beginnings and connectives. 4. To display pleasure in producing a piece of writing for its appearance and decorative value. 5. To use personal spelling lists, dictionaries and other aids in actual writing. 6. To be capable of writing in a clear well - formulated hand. 7. To demonstrate an awareness of grammar. 8. To show a sense of structure appropriate to the form of writing. 9. To be able to spell accurately words of the same pattern. 10. To demonstrate an awareness of comprehension, e.g. - answering in sentences/being able to set out their work in sections, e.g. -Q.1a, Q.1b etc. ACTIVITIES AND METHODS (a) Summarising stories in model or diagrammatic form. (b) Writing notices and posters for jumble sales, events, invitation cards, lists etc. (c) Writing out poems on card shapes relevant to the text. (d) Writing poems line by line at suggestion of teacher, e.g. - write one line about what the cat looks like - pencils down, wait - now write another line about the way he is moving. (e) Making class books on topics and sharing these with other children. (f) Writing instructions and directions. (g) Writing from personal experiences in the form of a diary. (h) Selecting appropriate materials. (i) Writing book reviews. (j) Teaching of grammar and spelling as it arises from children’s work.
