Page 2 of 7 PRIMARY 2 OBJECTIVES As relevant from Primary 1 plus : 1. To understand the use of letters, words and sentences. 2. To practice and improve handwriting skills e.g. - size/formation. 3. To write from real experience, e.g. - ‘My News’ or ‘What I saw on the way to school’. 4. To label simple diagrams and pictures. 5. To begin to order writing. 6. To know the names and order of the letters of the alphabet. 7. To make use of word banks and picture dictionaries. 8. To use different forms of writing. 9. To begin to write independently. 10. To encourage strategies for improving writing, e.g. - ‘I saw a dog’. How can we improve this sentence? (a) I saw a big brown dog. (b) I saw a sleepy dog (c) I saw a cross dog on my way to school.
Give the children examples as to how it can be improved. ACTIVITIES AND METHODS As relevant from Primary 1 plus : (a) Pictures and sentence matching. (b) Sentence completion activities, e.g. - simple lists, menus, wall stories, greeting cards, notes, notices for the classroom. (c) Practice in the correct handling and use of assorted writing materials. (d) Classification and labeling, e.g. - things from the kitchen, things from the garden, footwear etc, in child’s book or frieze. (e) Written comprehension based on stories from reading books/story books. (f) Word games where children locate and write the appropriate word. (g) Ordering around main event, e.g. - captions for wall stories, ordering the picture. (h) Cloze procedure. (i) Retell or sequence a story or part of a story.
